Your Store Should Survive Your Platform

Your Store Should Survive Your Platform
Platforms get acquired, banned or seized. Before you pay for another one, here are the four things that decide whether your store, and your buyers, survive a shutdown.

Two of the best-known storefront platforms have gone dark since 2024. One shut its doors; the other had its domain taken over and never came back. In both cases the sellers had done nothing wrong - and in both cases some of them lost the store, the buyer list, and the balance they had left on the platform.

That is the part nobody puts in a pricing table: a storefront is rented space. The rent is small, the landlord is friendly, and then one day the building is not yours anymore.

What you actually keep when a platform dies

There are exactly four things that matter after a shutdown, and only some of them are portable.

The address. If buyers arrive at yourbrand.com, you keep the traffic - point the domain somewhere else and the store reopens. If they arrive at platform.com/yourbrand, you keep nothing. Every customer you ever earned has to be re-found.

The buyer relationship. An email list you can export is an asset. A list you can only see inside a dashboard is a hostage. Ask what the export button produces before you need it, not after.

The product files. Your own source files are obviously yours. What is not obvious is whether every past buyer can still download what they paid for after the move - and whether their download links still work.

The licence state. If you sell software, the platform may hold the record of who is licensed to run what. Lose that and your paying customers are locked out of updates they already paid for, through no fault of yours.

The uncomfortable portability question

Most platforms are a good deal right up until the day you need to leave. The test is not "how much does it cost per month" but "what happens to my business in a week where I decide to leave, or am forced to".

What it isOn a rented storefrontWhat "owned" looks like
The addressplatform.com/yourbrandyourbrand.com with its own certificate
The buyer listvisible in a dashboard, export unclearan export you can open, today
Product filesstored by the platformfiles you can host anywhere
Licence recordsheld by the platformissued and verifiable from your store
The moneya platform balance you withdrawsettled into your own gateway account

Four honest questions expose almost every platform:

  • Is my store on my own domain, or a folder on yours? A custom domain with its own certificate is the difference between a setback and a restart.
  • Can I take the buyer list out? Email addresses, purchase history, and what each buyer is entitled to.
  • Do my past buyers keep access? A library where purchases stay downloadable is not a feature, it is continuity.
  • Who holds the money? If payments clear into a platform balance, a shutdown freezes your revenue. If they clear into your own gateway account, the platform was never holding it.

If a platform cannot answer all four in writing, the monthly price is the least important number on the page.

The "we will migrate you" trap

Migration help is a good sign, and also a good story. Before you count on it, ask what the import actually contains: product files and descriptions are easy; buyers, entitlements, licence keys and download history are the hard part, and they are the only parts that matter after a shutdown.

A platform that sells you on price and migration but not on domain ownership has simply moved the risk, not removed it.

Where Vexaris stands

We are not neutral on this, so here is the short version, with the parts that are easy to verify by opening a free store and looking.

  • Every store runs on its own address (yourstore.vexaris.app) and you can connect your own domain with HTTPS. Traffic is yours, and so is the address on the invoice.
  • We take 0% commission. You pay for the plan, not for selling: Free, $6.99, $14.99 and $39.99 per month.
  • Payments are collected through your own gateway accounts, so the money settles with you and not into a balance we control.
  • Digital delivery is automatic, and buyers keep a library where their purchases remain available.
  • Software and plugin sales can carry licence keys, with update delivery tied to a valid licence.
  • Products, orders, buyers and theme settings live in one database you can see in the panel, not scattered across third-party plugins.

What we do not have is a magic migration button from every other platform. If you move, products and content are quick; buyers and licence keys need care. Anyone promising otherwise is selling you a feeling.

A twenty-minute test, before you pay anyone

Open a free store on any platform - including this one - and do the boring things first.

  1. Put a real product in, at a real price, and buy it yourself.
  2. Check that the file actually arrives, and that it is still there tomorrow.
  3. Look at what the buyer receives: a link that expires, or an account they can return to.
  4. Find the export option for buyers, and open the file it produces.
  5. Ask what happens to download links and licence keys if you leave.
  6. Read the plan limits - products, revenue, storage, seats - not just the price.

If the store survives that test, it will probably survive a bad week.

The bottom line

A platform is a partner you can replace. A platform that holds your domain, your buyers and your licence records is a landlord - and landlords change terms.

Choose on what you keep, then compare what you pay. The order matters, because the cheapest rent is worthless in a building you cannot enter.

If you want to test the four questions above on a live store, create one free and try to break it. Our pricing is public, the feature set is documented, and if you are currently weighing options, the comparisons with Gumroad and Sellfy are unsentimental about where we lose.

Frequently asked questions

Do I own my store on Vexaris?

You own the domain, the products, the buyer data and the licence records. Vexaris runs the infrastructure and the software. You can connect your own domain, and the store address is never a folder under someone else's brand.

What happens to my buyers if I move to another platform?

Buyers stay reachable through the data you control, and past purchases remain available in the buyer library while the store runs. Exporting and re-importing entitlements after a move needs care - plan for it before the move, not during it.

Does a custom domain cost extra?

No. Connecting your own domain with HTTPS is part of the platform, not an add-on.

Which is cheaper: 0% commission with a monthly plan, or a percentage per sale?

It depends on volume, and the answer usually flips somewhere between $1,000 and $5,000 per month. At $2,000 per month, a 10% platform charges $2,400 a year; a $14.99 plan charges $180. Under $300 per month the difference is noise - choose on delivery and continuity instead.
