Etsy vs Vexaris (2026): Which Platform Keeps More of Your Digital Sales?

Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee is only the start: processing, listing, regulatory and ad fees stack up, and digital delivery stops at five files per listing. Here is the 2026 math.

Etsy is where a lot of people sell their first digital product, and for good reason: the marketplace already has the shoppers. You upload a template, a printable or an e-book, and someone searching for it can find you the same day. There is no ad budget to test, no traffic problem to solve first.

The trade is the fee stack, and it is larger than the headline number suggests. On top of the 6.5% transaction fee, a digital sale also carries payment processing, a listing fee per sale, and depending on where you and your buyer are, a regulatory fee, currency conversion and VAT on the fees themselves. Then there are the file rules: five files per listing, 20 MB each, and no way to issue a unique license key or e-pin per order.

This is a straight comparison of what Etsy actually costs a digital seller in 2026 — verified against Etsy's own help center in October 2026 — against Vexaris, which charges 0% platform commission and hosts your own branded store. No hype in either direction. Etsy wins on demand; Vexaris wins on margin and delivery control; the numbers below show where the line sits.

What Etsy Charges for a Digital Sale in 2026

Etsy's fee list is not one fee, it is a stack. For a digital item (no shipping, instant download) the parts that apply are:

  • Listing fee: $0.20 per listing. A listing expires after four months, and with auto-renew on, every sale renews it for another $0.20.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the total order amount in your listing currency.
  • Payment processing fee: charged on every Etsy Payments order, and the rate depends on the country of your bank account — 3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + £0.20 in the UK, 4% + €0.30 across most of the EU, 6.5% + 14 TRY in Türkiye.
  • Regulatory operating fee: applied in a handful of countries — 1.67% in Türkiye, 1.14% in France, 0.88% in Spain, 0.80% in Italy, 0.50% in Canada, 0.48% in the UK.
  • Currency conversion fee: 2.5% of the sale amount if your listing currency differs from your payment account currency.
  • VAT on seller fees: in many countries Etsy adds VAT to the fees themselves — 20% in Türkiye and the UK, 19–27% across the EU.
  • Offsite Ads fee: 15% on orders that arrive through Etsy's external ads if your shop has made under $10,000 in any 365-day period, 12% above that. Above $10,000, enrollment is mandatory.

Figures checked against the Etsy fee documentation, the payment processing table and the regulatory operating fee page in October 2026. Etsy also charges a one-time, non-refundable shop set-up fee that varies by location. Etsy changes fees; always confirm on the official pages before you price a product.

The Math on a $20 Download

Percentages hide the pain; a concrete sale does not. Here is what a single $20 digital sale leaves you, before income tax, in three common seller locations:

Cost lineUS sellerUK sellerEU seller (DE/FR/NL)
Sale price$20.00$20.00$20.00
Transaction fee (6.5%)−$1.30−$1.30−$1.30
Payment processing−$0.85−$1.05−$1.10
Listing fee−$0.20−$0.20−$0.20
Regulatory fee (where it applies)—−$0.10—
VAT on the fees—−$0.53−$0.46
You keep$17.65$16.82$16.94
Effective platform cut11.8%15.9%15.3%

Now add the ad channel. If that one sale arrived through an Offsite Ad, another 15% comes off the sale price — $3.00 on a $20 download. The US seller lands at $14.65, and Etsy's total cut reaches 26.8%. That is the number most sellers miss when they plan a launch: on Etsy, acquisition can cost more than the platform itself.

Türkiye is the sharpest example because both the processing fee and the regulatory fee are higher there. On a ₺500 digital sale roughly ₺113 goes to fees — 6.5% transaction, 6.5% + ₺14 processing, 1.67% regulatory, a listing fee, and 20% VAT on top of all of it — an effective cut near 22–23%. The seller keeps about ₺387.

Etsy's Digital Delivery Limits

Fees are only half of the trade. Etsy's digital delivery is file-based, and the constraints matter most for exactly the products that sell well: templates, plugins, code and codes.

  • Five files per listing, 20 MB each. A large design pack or a game build has to be split, compressed and re-checked.
  • Eighteen accepted file types. A .jar (Minecraft plugins), .rar or .7z cannot be uploaded as they are — the buyer has to unzip a wrapper first.
  • No variations on digital items. One file, one price. Tiers, license levels and bundle options have to become separate listings.
  • No per-buyer codes. Etsy delivers the same file to every buyer. It has no built-in system for issuing one unique e-pin, activation code or license key per order — sellers typically attach a shared text file or send codes manually.
  • Files cannot be swapped after a sale. Once a buyer has paid, the only way to revoke their access is to cancel the order. There is no version channel that pushes an updated file to everyone who already bought.
  • Creativity standards. Items must be made or designed by you; reselling PLR packs or mass-produced content is not allowed on Etsy.

For an e-book seller, none of this is a blocker. For someone selling Minecraft plugins, e-pins, license keys or a template that gets regular updates, it is the whole workflow — and it is why those categories end up managing delivery by hand, in DMs and spreadsheets.

What Etsy Genuinely Does Better

A comparison that pretends Etsy has no advantages is not worth reading. Etsy has three things a new store does not:

  • Demand. Millions of shoppers search Etsy with buying intent every month. A new store starts at zero; an Etsy listing starts in front of an audience.
  • Trust. Buyers already have an account, a payment method and a dispute path. That removes friction a brand-new domain has to earn.
  • Tax handling for buyers. As a marketplace facilitator, Etsy collects and remits VAT on digital items for buyers in a long list of countries — an administrative burden a solo seller would otherwise carry.

Those are real advantages, and they are the reason the honest answer is usually "use both" rather than "delete your Etsy shop".

Where Vexaris Fits

Vexaris is a digital-commerce platform for sellers who want their own storefront without a per-order cut — see what it replaces, feature by feature. Every plan runs on a 0% platform sales commission model: you pay for hosting and capacity, not a percentage of each sale.

PlanMonthlyProductsRevenue limitCustom domain
Free$07$100—
Starter$6.9935$1,000Yes
Professional$14.9975$5,000Yes
Enterprise$39.99UnlimitedUnlimitedYes

Prices in USD, monthly billing; yearly billing is discounted. Limits and features can change — the current table lives on the Vexaris pricing page.

The delivery model is where the two platforms diverge most:

  • One product, one file up to 32 MB — zip, rar, 7z, jar, tar or gz, no wrapper needed for a plugin.
  • Unlimited stock or unique stock. In unique mode every line is one e-pin or one license key; a sale consumes a line, stock counts down, and the product closes automatically when it runs out.
  • License keys signed per order, generated from your prefix, and delivered into the buyer's purchase library instantly after payment approval.
  • Version updates. Release a new build and every previous buyer finds it in their download list — no manual re-sending, no order cancellations to revoke access.
  • Twelve payment integrations — Shopier, PayTR, iyzico, Paywant, Stripe, PayPal, Whop, Dodo Payments, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, BitPay and Cryptomus — including local methods and crypto, so a sale does not depend on one gateway approving your country.
  • Your domain, your customer list. Paid plans connect a custom domain, and the storefront, checkout and emails carry your brand instead of a marketplace's.

The Break-Even Point

Run the comparison on monthly revenue instead of a single sale and the shape of the decision appears:

  • $500/month: Etsy keeps roughly $60–80. Vexaris Free (up to $100) is not enough volume, so Starter at $6.99 plus processing lands near $25. Difference: about $40 a month.
  • $2,000/month: Etsy keeps roughly $240–320. Vexaris Professional at $14.99 plus processing lands near $75. Difference: about $180 a month.
  • $10,000/month: Etsy keeps roughly $1,200–1,600, and above this level Offsite Ads enrollment becomes mandatory. Vexaris Enterprise at $39.99 plus processing lands near $340.

Read that as a budget, not an argument. On Etsy, the fee buys exposure you would otherwise have to pay for with ads. On Vexaris, the subscription buys margin and control, and the exposure is yours to build. Most sellers who do both treat Etsy as the discovery channel and their own store as the place where repeat buyers, license products and updates live.

Can I sell on Etsy and Vexaris at the same time?

Yes, and it is the most common setup among sellers who outgrow the marketplace. Keep discovery listings on Etsy, then deliver license-key products, updates and repeat purchases from your own store, where the commission is 0% and the buyer relationship is yours.

Does Vexaris handle the fees Etsy charges?

Vexaris does not charge a platform commission, so the 6.5% transaction fee and the Offsite Ads percentage disappear from your unit economics. Payment processing still applies — every gateway charges its own rate — and in countries where VAT is due on fees, that is handled according to your payment setup.

Which is cheaper for a $5 product?

Low-ticket products feel the fixed fees hardest. On Etsy a $5 sale pays $0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction ($0.33) and processing (around $0.40) — roughly 19% before any ad fee. On Vexaris the same sale pays processing only, so a $5 e-pin keeps meaningfully more.

Final Thoughts

Etsy is not overpriced for what it provides: an audience, trust and tax handling in one place. But it is a marketplace, and marketplaces are priced as a share of your revenue. The moment your products need unique codes, license keys, plugin files or updates, or the moment a large share of orders arrive through paid placement, that share becomes the biggest line item in your business.

Vexaris is the other side of that trade: your brand, your domain, your delivery rules and 0% platform commission, with a free plan to test it and paid plans from $6.99 when volume justifies them.

New to digital products entirely? The requirements guide walks through delivery, licenses and stock from zero.

If your next product is an e-pin, a plugin or anything that comes with a key, start with the feature breakdown and compare the plans on the pricing page. If you are still deciding between marketplaces, the same math is applied to Sellfy and Gumroad in our other comparisons.

Price your product against the fee stack, not against the headline percentage. That is the difference between a store that grows and one that quietly pays for its own traffic twice.
